Any black belt bjj instructors in edmonton? I was just wondering... i heard of arashido. but i hear hes only purple belt... not discounting the guy i am just wondering if there r any higher belts teaching. I heard of lets roll(whos there instructor) someone mentioned it being in edmonton in another forum? If there aint any black belts in edmonton, we could sure use a gracie barra school or something like it out here...

Check with Steve Bergeron. I don't recall the name of his school but it's on the west end and he does his own promotion called Warzone.
Not sure on his status but it is up there.

Kyle Cardinal is a Brown Belt and probably the best BJJ coach you will find in Edmonton. He recently went to Brazil to compete against Black Belts at the World Masters. None of the Black Belts could tap him out, and then I think before the big tournament he blew his knee out in the ocean.
He trains his students out of Millennium Place in sherwood Park.

What about Brad Murphy? I'm not sure what level he is, although I do know he's very advanced. He runs the Combat Zone/Wrecking Crew. Everytime I talk to him he's either on his way out, way back, or planning his next trip to South America, Europe, or Asia. Not to say he's always gone and wont be there to instruct you, but from what I know he's world class. So check him out.
Mike Y from Arashi-Do is "just" a purple belt last I heard, but he's a dynamite guy and a great instructor/fighter. He would be top of my list for sure.

Didn't Brad Murphy talk of big game, but once he decided to compete, he got tapped by a white belt...?

I was at that tournament many many years ago. He got tapped my some 14 year old kid. To his credit, the kid was awesome. But Brad nearly broke 2 rules to try to get out of a triangle choke. Eventually he tapped. I laughed.

Ouch a 14yr old.I don't know if I could allow myself to be trained by someone beat by a 14yr old kid.

I think Brad gears his training more for self defense as opposed to competition. That said, he always has new guys coming up that want to fight in kotc.

I don't know Brad personally, I've only ever talked to him through e-mail. I've never seen him compete so I'm not too sure what he's like. I heard he was top notch... but then again I heard that from him so who knows for sure. Either way any time I've talked to him he's been super nice and really an all around nice guy. He wanted to sign me to the Wrecking Crew, but I told him I was already with Team Denarius. He still set me up with my current sponsor, Fighter Gear Intl., so in my books that's pretty awesome. He didn't have to do that for me but he did, so as far as I'm concerned regardless what his competition record/ experience is he's a great guy that's looking to help guys out. At the end of the day, someone that tries to help others without looking for their own personal benifits and gains is a top notch person. I know this thread is about looking for a good bjj instructor; but I just thought it fitting to thank and praise Brad for what he's done for me, no matter how little that seems to anyone else, it means alot to me.

Mike is really good, super nice, and arashi-do as a whole is a really good operation. Lots of really good fighters in several dif. styles.
Why do I need a hug Marcus?

Oh and Marcus, I should thank you to. You've done a lot for me and helped me out in ways I couldn't have done by myself. You're top notch in my books too.
BTW Peyton says thank you (and your family) for the Dora doll, she loves it and hasn't put it down since I gave it to her (on your behalf) :).

To original poster...You seem to have ignored Tim's post. Kyle is great and will probably be a black in a short time...If you ignored because he said Sherwood Park you should realize he trains out of Millienuem Place which is right off of the Yellowhead and a short drive from most locations in edmonton.
You will not match the BJJ with any other club in edmonton for pure BJJ. Many MMA fighters go here as well...

Steve Bergeron is unbelievable and not only can he do but he can teach.
Steve breaks down the mechanics very well and if I had enough motivation to get back into BJJ I wouldn't even think twice about not going to him. He is a class act and he is a great instructor.
The way he runs his classes are a great way to learn the strageties and mechanics of BJJ

millenium place sherwood park home to lets roll
Kyle Cardinal teaches there he is a 4 stripe brown belt which means anytime will get the blackbelt, also Rodrigo Mundruca comes down at least 4 times a year to do rank testing.
Anounced last week were the new classes Mon. no gi/MMA 6:30
Tues.Gi 8:00
Thurs.Gi 8:00
Fri. no gi/MMA 7:00
Each class is basically a seminar
There's about 7 or more purple belts with multiple stripes that dont even compete mma but have a stong understanding of it and are complete machines.
We have A bluebelt 4 stripes that just went to brazil and took gold and another of our guys took silver in brazil.
There is alot of bluebelts to roll with and tons of 2-3 stripe whitebelts
plus we have tons of MMA guys that train here time to time such as Galbraith (king of the cage champ),Harris ,Penner,Big Tim,Victor, knapp, and the list goes on.
Bottom line It's a Great club come Roll
